A fixed bridge replaces a missing tooth by anchoring a natural-looking replacement to the teeth beside it.
A dental bridge places an artificial tooth (called a pontic) in the gap left by a missing tooth, anchored by crowns on the neighboring teeth. The result is fixed in place: no removing it at night, no slipping when you chew or speak.
Bridges can be made of porcelain, metal, or a combination. There are three main types: the traditional bridge (crowns on both neighboring teeth), the cantilever bridge (anchored on one side), and the Maryland or resin-bonded bridge (bonded to the backs of the neighboring teeth).
Left open, the gap from a missing tooth lets neighboring teeth drift, changes your bite and can affect speech. If you have lost a tooth, Dr. Williams will walk you through whether a bridge or an implant is the better fit for your situation.
